Myth & Spirit

The work of Joseph Campbell

with Connie Leonard

Joseph Campbell was perhaps the greatest thinker of the 20th Century in the areas of
mythology and religion. His extensive writings cover an incredibly wide range of
spirituality, culture, and human mythology, from the most primitive to an exploration of
the “mythologically impoverished” modern western culture. Campbell was an
academician, but with a flair for popular language and a true feel for the texture of
mythology. He championed the individualistic nature of human beings and urged all to
“follow their bliss” – to find their true spiritual heritage and to express it in a fulfilling
human life, while being their own counsel. He is a true transcendentalist in the lineage
of Emerson and Thoreau.
Campbell’s works are relevant to the metaphysical student because he speaks to the
heart of the archetypal symbolism which we all share – symbolism which forms the crux
of all world mythology. Mythology is the means by which we go beyond the appearance
of the physical universe and access our inner depths, ultimately the deepest part of
ourselves – the One which unifies all. Campbell illuminates and ties the world
mythological traditions together to explain the development of spirituality and religion in
all cultures – and within each individual.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Connie
